As much as we enjoy providing our readers and customers with fun facts and ideas, sometimes it is important for us to address more serious health issues. Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest form of cancer among the cancers that affect both men and women, claiming over 50,000 lives in 2013 according to the Center for Disease Control.
Most physicians, as well as a fair amount of media advertising and many public service announcements, recommend tests such as colonoscopies and fecal tests to screen for these cancers, beginning at a patient’s age that varies based upon an individual’s family health history. There are also certain general measures that can be taken to help (not prevent entirely) reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Overall, a proper and well-balanced diet, including sufficient fiber, is a good way to start. But keeping a bacteria-free mouth is also critical.
Studies have shown that there may be correlation between bacteria in the mouth and the development of colon cancer. Researchers have suggested that these bacteria can travel via the bloodstream to the gut and colon, supporting a Harvard University study which links one type of oral bacteria to the acceleration of malignant cells in animals. These “fusobacteria” carry a protein that binds to a sugar found on the surface of some colorectal tumors. While these studies are still in progress, the results are significant enough to warrant attention.
So why not take the time to work on eliminating some of the bacteria in YOUR mouth? By adhering to a good oral hygiene regime including brushing and using your TUNG Brush and Gel daily to reduce the bacteria that adhere to your tongue, you will not only freshen your breath and reduce tooth decay, but, together with a good diet, regular checkups, and proper health screenings, you may just reduce your risk for colorectal cancer. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
