What We Know About Tongue Cleaning
It is clear that brushing your teeth and flossing is of vital importance to good oral care.
Based on dental research, EQUALLY IMPORTANT is proper tongue cleaning.
Toothbrushes should NOT be used on the tongue! Why? They are ineffective due to the high/narrow profile which causes gagging and soft bristles that cannot penetrate the nooks and crannies where bacteria hide. In addition, any bacteria landing on the toothbrush from the tongue will be seeded into the gums.
Many dental professionals recommend children not use tongue scrapers due to potential damage to the tongue caused by using a hard plastic device. They also are messy and uncomfortable to use. Therefore, adults and kids shy away from routine use.
In addition, scrapers in general are inefficient as they cannot penetrate the nooks and crannies where harmful bacteria hide.
Tips To Teach Your Kids
Dirty tongues cause bad breath and can discourage friendships.
Make it a habit. Teach them to start their day off right, by brushing their tongue when they brush and floss their teeth
Clean tongues can keep you from getting sick and getting cavities (which could mean extra trips to the dentist!)
Encourage them to look at their tongue before and after they clean it so they can see the difference.
Go slow, and gently brush. Their tongue will get used to it.
To stick their tongue out as far as possible, take a deep breath and quickly brush the back of the tongue. The gag reflex is normal but will begin to go away with regular use.
